There are a variety of tools available for Unified Modeling Language (UML) in the market. You can get free, open source, and paid UML modeling tools. A comprehensive list of UML tools can be found at Wikipedia.org. For more discussion on the UML modeling tools topic, you can check StackOverflow.com as well. However, my favorite tool for UML modeling is Visio. It is from Microsoft and you know most of the interface from Visual Studio and Office already. It is a paid software. However, if you just want to learn and explore the features then you can download a free trial for 60 days. This is enough time for you to learn UML modeling following my blog post series on the topic.
You can get Microsoft Visio Professional 2013 evaluation version from Microsoft website. After creating your account or signing in, you’ll be able to download the product.
After Microsoft Visio installer is downloaded, you can simply install it easily like any other Microsoft software.
The Microsoft Visio 2013 can be found under the Microsoft Office 2013 menu option after installation. The interface is quite intuitive and easy to understand. It gives a similar look as other products in Microsoft Office suite.
In the upcoming posts, I’m going to show you the different elements of Visio and how to design UML diagrams using Visio. We can try some other tools as well as and when required along the way.
